Eligibility, Handicaps & Classes

The racing is open to cruisers of MYC members and non-members as bona fide guests of the club. Entrants will be able to opt to enter using any combination of RYA Yacht Time Correction (YTC) handicaps, IRC handicaps and Club Handicaps (CH). CH are allocated by the Club and adjusted based on results that are clear evidence of the speed the cruisers are sailed over water. There is a mechanism for adding cruisers without a track record.  Here are the current Club Handicaps.  They are indicative of the handicaps that will be used to place cruisers in classes for the series.    Courses will be carefully chosen to ensure, as far as possible, that no advantage or disadvantage is given to cruisers across the range of handicaps within classes because of the tidal streams.

Should competitors have any questions or queries after submitting their entry form and having read the NOR please contact the office – office@medwayyachtclub.com.

Some questions emerged during Race 1 as to exactly how to finish at buoy 16 in line with the sailing instructions after the previous mark of the course was Stangate Spit.  This drawing is intended to make the sailing instructions clearer.   It means that it is possible to stay out of the tide and finish the race provided that imaginary line A is crossed but you will have to sail considerably further.

For those of you who think in bearings, the bearing from Sharp Ness to buoy 16 is 226 degrees (imaginary line B).   Imaginary line A is at 90 degrees so you will finish with buoy 16 to starboard when the centre of the buoy is on a bearing from your bows of 316 degrees (226+90).   If you are leaving the buoy to port you finish when the bearing from your bows to the buoy is 136 degrees (226-90).  This is a chance for someone to use a hand bearing compass to identify when the buoy is on the right bearing from your bows.

Classes & Handicaps

Here  is the allocation of cruisers to classes using the Club Handicaps.  The IRC, YTC & CH handicaps are shown.   Some of the IRC & YTC handicaps are outstanding and have still to be advised.   The CH may be revised following each race.  The new Club Handicaps for Race 5 are shown and explained in the Report for Race 4 below.
