Youth

Medway YC Optimist are a recognised IOCA (UK) flotilla and our aim is to take young sailors from Beginners and ready to race in Regatta fleet and Main fleet IOCA (UK) events.

Medway YC Optimist helps to introduce children aged 7 and over to sailing, developing their sailing skills and confidence on the water in an informal environment. Our aim is to give them the best start to their sailing career. We use Optibat boats for the Beginners with a view to quickly get them into the racing Optimist fleet.

The Cadet class is open to all club members between the ages of 10 and 23.  Membership can be through Family or Guardian membership (10-16). If you are aged 16+ you can join via Junior membership in your own right.

There is no requirement on skill level. Just turn up on a Sunday with a desire to get on the water with suitable clothing. Remember the river can get cold so a wet suit, buoyancy aid, sailing shoes and a wind cheater will be needed.

As you get older and larger you out grow the Optimist but there are plenty of options for you at Medway Yacht Club. The first step up is the Topper and then Laser and if you wish to move into sailing with a friend we offer the options of RS Feva or 420.

Which class of boat you choose depends on whether you want to follow the RYA squad racing syllabus or whether you want to just enjoy sailing without the pressure of racing.

You are of course quite welcome to use your own boat.

Don’t think the cadet section is all about racing and slavishly following the RYA squad system.

If you prefer you can learn to sail for fun. The cadet section runs plenty of fun events.

This picture is from the day the Optibats all sailed down the river and visited the Whitstable Oyster Smack “Stormy Petrel”, which is over 100 years old.
