Youth Sailing

Medway YC is involved in Youth Racing in different classes.

We are a recognized IOCA(UK) flotilla and we keep working on our Junior Team taking them from a beginner level up to ready to race in a Regatta fleet or Main fleet IOCA events.

The minimum age to introduce children is 8 and they are developing their skills and confidence on the water through a training held on a regular basis. They will start in our Optibat boats and move on to our Optimist or possibly Toppers.

The Club regularly hosts ITCA training and racing (London & South East) and hopefully our Junior sailing Toppers will be part of it.

Young sailors older than 13 can access to our Youth Team leading them to get into the Laser Team or any other Club’s sailing class. One of our youngest sailors is already competing in the UKLA National Championship in the 4.7 class and we hope to have more young sailors growing up with us and getting to National level.

The Youth programme has no requirement on skills level and it is not only focused on racing. Our young sailors have plenty of different options such as trying different and exciting boats: RS Feva or more technical 420s, have an experience on our keelboats and double handed dinghies, or simply keep learning advanced sailing skills.

The decision about which class of boat sailing depends only on them: following the racing pathway or enjoy sailing and learning new skills without the pressure of the race.

Any sailors taking part in our Youth programme are welcome to use our boats, then as soon as they reach a good level we can help them find their own one.

We are training every Sunday from March to the end of October and we have a  Winter Training schedule.  The only equipment needed is a wetsuit, sailing shoes and depending on the season, thermal clothing.

Our professional full time Training Manager oversees the youth sailing programme within the club. This means that you can be confident your children are in safe hands when at the club. They will learn valuable skills giving them confidence on the water. It is of prime importance that this is fun as well as being safe. Nobody is pressured to follow a fixed racing oriented programme if they don’t want to.

The Youth programme is open to all members between 10 and 23, please have a look at our membership options.
