Mike Wallis

It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that Michael (Mike) Wallis passed away in his sleep on 7th May 2024.

Mike served as Commodore between 1999 and 2001 and, such was his success and popularity in that role, he served a second term from 2008 to 2011.  He was a Trustee of the Club and EAORA supporter for nearly 30 years.

Mike was truly dedicated and committed to the roles he took on at the Club.  He supported all the events from Cadet Regattas to Keelboat Regattas and on many occasions generously allowed his beautiful yachts ‘Diamond’ to be the Committee Boat for the events on the Medway but also for EAORA races in Europe and in Ireland for Disabled Sailors.

Many will recall happy days racing and cruising with Mike and Lorraine on the Medway and beyond.  He loved the warm sunny days of the Caribbean.

He was incredibly generous with both his time and sponsorship of the Club and as Commodore he could always be found in the Dragon Bar getting know new members and making them feel welcome.

He loved to party, always ensuring that Lorraine had a ‘new frock’ for Club dinners and his wit and banter during speeches will not be forgotten.

Mike has been described as a ‘special sort of Commodore’ and we will all have our own fond memories of him.

He was passionate about the Club and wanted it to be a place of sailing and friendships.  He was a pillar of enthusiasm and fun and we shall all miss him greatly.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and very loyal supporter, Lorraine.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday 12th June at Thames View Crematorium from 2pm, Mike’s celebration of life will then follow at Medway Yacht Club from 3pm. If you are a member of the club please contact the club to let us know of your intention to attend, this will enable us to help support Lorraine accordingly.
