In a light Southerly 2 Squibs, Avocet and Monkey Business crossed the line close together and proceeded down river in a very light breeze until it decided to cease blowing. The breeze could be seen beyond 30 but how to get there became a major issue. So, we drifted back then another puff and we made some forward motion. This continued until Avocet, slightly in front of Monkey Business managed to clear the tall houses on St Mary’s Island and were off, by the time Monkey Business got going, Avocet had a substantial lead all the way to 22 and back to the line. The breeze remained steady until ‘heartbreak reach’ where both boats struggled to the line. In spite of a frustrating race drinks were enjoyed by all on the terrace afterwards with the temperature around 20, listening to some very good music and the aroma of the BBQ in the background.
