Sonata 2020 Class Captain’s Report

Well what are year 2020 has been. Back in April it seemed like we would never sail again and we’d be stuck looking at the same 4 walls week in, week out dreaming about sunny Saturday afternoons racing on the River Medway.

However, by July lengthy discussions were had via online Sailing Committee Meetings to ensure sailing could happen again safely and by the middle of July we were lined up at 13:50 on the club line ready to race again. The season carried on until the end of October and consisted as full a racing program as we could manage. The season brought challenging conditions with a few days called off for too much wind, a few interesting light days and some that actually brought perfect summer sailing conditions.

The most boats we had out per race was 6 but regularly saw 4 on the start line which given the late start to the season and some people not getting boats launched was on the whole a good turnout.

On White Noise we took this season as an opportunity to do some club racing but also had some cruising afternoons and a night in Queenborough harbor. They really are versatile little boats and just as fun to cruise as they are to race! However we are not that old yet and will be back racing next year.

Skipper took line honors for the COVID 2020 series – I believe the first time they have won a series overall. Very well done to John and crew.  Closely followed by Ian and Musical Express in 2nd overall with Paul and Blue Tack in 3rd place. These crews raced regularly and made some huge improvements to their sailing. I am looking forward to getting back out there and racing with them next year.

The season is not over yet! I know a few Sonatas are competing in the Medway Autumn Series which goes up until the end of November. This includes ‘Silver Lining’ a Sonata owned by the club and Sonata Class. She is being raced by Charlie Baker and a group of Medway Cadets and from what I saw last weekend they are racing her very well! A great learning experience for them and I am sure they are having lots of fun.

Looking forward to next year and I know the club are wanting to run an action packed season with Medway Regatta, Medway Marathon, Windward / Leeward days and many other events. I know lots of us were looking forward to heading to Cowes for the Sonata Nationals this year which have now been postponed to next August.
