Duties at Medway Yacht Club

Medway Yacht Club Duty Rotas

MYC is very much a “Members” club and nearly all sailing activities rely on the goodwill of members giving up their time for the benefit of others. Whilst this help is often on an informal basis, the club’s racing programme  is supported by a formal duty rota system. (Sailing Club Manager (SCM) website https://portal.medwayyachtclub.com/login )

All racing members are expected to perform a minimum of 2 duties over the whole sailing season. These are not onerous and are a good way of getting to know other members and learning more about race & club organisation. Non-racing members are encouraged to complete duties if the wish to support the club, it is a great way to get to know what goes on and get to know club members.

The Club uses the SCM rota system. Each member will be emailed their own login details and a link to SCM on the Club website. The entire years sailing calendar will appear on SCM and members will be allocated duties through their Class Captain. Members will receive automated email reminders of the duties they have agreed to do. If a member cannot do a duty that they have selected they can swap duties with other members using the message facility on SCM without having to know other members contact details. It is a member’s responsibility to find a replacement if they are unable to fulfill a duty they have put their name down for.

Please arrive at the club at least 1 hour before the scheduled race start time when you are on duty.

A brief explanation of the duties is given below:

Officer of the Day (OOD)

Takes overall charge of the day’s racing. Makes decisions on whether to sail and sets the course with Class Captains.
The Officer of the Day staff the Race Hut  and start / finish the races and send race results to Class Captains via email.

Line Helper

Supports the OOD with the race starting and finishing.

Safety Boats (2 people per boat) Rib and Displacement

The rescue boats are always afloat for club racing. As well as laying the course marks, the boat’s prime concern is the safety of the competitors on the water.
Rib Helm must hold a Safety Boat licence and Displacement Helm PB2 as a minimum.
