Race 6 – Wednesday 29th June 2016
Wednesday Evening Race Series
On another wet and windy evening a reduced fleet of 4 cruisers and 1 keel boat set off on a short course down to the end of Gillingham Reach and back. With the agreement of the first three crews arriving that evening when the wind was laying over the yachts on their moorings under their bare poles, a short and safe course seemed preferable. However, the forecasted gusts of 31 mph didn’t arrive and with maximum wind speeds in the gusts of 22 knots, a longer course would have been achievable.
Sonata, Red Dwarf had the best start, closely followed by Zephros and Sea Horse. Red Dwarf were the only boat to set their spinnaker and did so twice for the close reach down to the Willsonian’s where the change in direction of the river made it too fine and they joined the rest of the fleet in a two sail close reach to Mears and again set their spinnaker for the next reach down Gillingham Reach.
Valkyrie lead around buoy 26 and back to the club line wining the cruiser fleet and Red Dwarf, the overall result and keel boat fleet.
The short race enabled a number of crews to attend the second part of the talk on racing rules.
There’s no race next Wednesday due to the Regatta with a Thursday evening race instead. Upnor Sailing Club welcome us to a BBQ afterwards-let’s hope for warm sunny weather!
