Potted History of the MEDWAY YACHT CLUB
Medway Yacht Club, originally founded in 1880 by W S Nicholson together with a group of local businessman and members of the Royal Engineers Yacht Club. Notable early members included The Earl of Cavendish, Lord Beresford, WL Wylie (marine artist and Commodore 1896-1904) and A Henty (author of children's adventure stories). Yacht racing continues to be the life blood of the club, though not to the exclusion of cruising and social events. 1898 saw the start of one-design racing and success in answering the Sydney Flying Squadron challenge, winning the Anglo-Australian Shield. Since then members have participated in many local and international regattas. . , |

The Sydney Flying Squadron challenge was revived and re-run at Upnor in 1998 and in Sydney in 2002 using replica skiffs of the 1900’s. Initially, meetings were held in various Rochester venues but after 1920 the Club’s first clubhouse was situated on the Esplanade near Rochester Castle. Sailing events were organised both above and below Rochester Bridge, while owners of motor cruisers had moorings further up the river at Allington. After World War II it was decided to unite Club activities and in 1948 the Lower Upnor site was acquired with space for boat storage, a hard and easy access to the Medway Estuary and the North Sea. In 1952 the main club was designed and built. The Club currently leases 200+ moorings and boasts 7 racing class fleets with national and international competitors amongst them. Ideally situated under an hour from London and fifteen minutes from Bluewater, the club offers a friendly traditional club atmosphere and welcomes sailors of all standards to join.
