Wednesday Evening Race Report Race 4
After last weeks drift the 4th Wednesday evening race held on 10th June was held in a gusting North Easterly 4/6 which found most boats undercrewed (where are you ! ) However the sun was shining as 11 boats braved the conditions with smaller jibs being set and some boats reefed. Rowena (Red Fox 200E the smallest boat in the fleet nearly had the perfect start but was just over the line. Booty judged it well with Valkyrie, Wild Rover MG 346 ) and Mr Chips all close behind. Roka decided to go for the south shore and on tacking forced most of the fleet onto port tack. Wild Rover (Sadler 32) in its first outing this series pinched along the south shore out of the tide but was unable to take much out of the leading boats.
Booty led the fleet down the river although fell over in the gusts with Roka close behind. The 1st mark was buoy 23 and on closing the forts the waves with wind against tide were quite large and Roka retired as they were getting a soaking (sailors) ? Wizard also only 2 up followed with an early bath with a jib wrapped around the forestay.
Reefer struggled in the stronger winds after winning the cruiser division last week but in its first outing in the series Munchkin (Sonata) revelled in the conditions with Valkayrie and Mr Chips performing well. Only a couple of boats flew spinnakers on the downwind leg to buoy 26.
Muskrat Ramble also in its 1st outing struggled with only 2 up and retired.
As expected the larger boat Booty took line honours with Valkyrie and Mr Chips not far behind. However credit must be given to Rowena who completed the course.
On handicap Valkyrie won the cruiser division with Mr Chips second. Munchkin finished second overall but was the 1st keelboat.
There are number of boats looking for crew and willingness is as important as experience so please let me know if you can make it or turn up about 6pm and find me either in the clubhouse or near the marquee.
